CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Jyn Erso
• Character Age: 28. Star Wars supplementary material is very often contradictory, and what a couple of pieces of it give as her age (21-22 around the time of the movie) doesn't have consistency with the character as she appears onscreen. Since there's no official indication of her age in any Star Wars film itself, given the age of actress Felicity Jones when the movie was filmed, plus how the character presents herself, I'm estimating Jyn as being about 28 years old.
• Character Canon: Star Wars
• Canon Point: Rogue One, at her death

• Character History: Wiki entry

• Character Personality:

— (+) Compassionate: Fundamentally, even in spite of the harsh life she's lived, Jyn is carried by a deep compassion for others. On multiple occasions, she can be seen sticking her neck out to help complete strangers, even at great risk to herself; in Rogue One, she rushes out into the streets of Jedha City to move a little girl out of the line of fire when a conflict between rebel and Imperial forces breaks out, and in the Forces of Destiny shorts, she fights stormtroopers to keep them from seizing a stranger's beloved pet tooka cat. She is seen expressing kindness to the other central characters in the film — including handing a blaster to K2SO, with whom she'd initially had an antagonistic relationship. Horror at the devastation wrought by the test of the Death Star on Jedha, the lives lost, reignites a fire in her to take action against the Empire. Furthermore, she puts herself in harm's way to defend people she barely knows, referring to Chirrut, Baze, K2, and Cassian to Saw's rebels as her "friends" to spare them from getting killed, and in the Rogue One novelization, she positions herself between Cassian and the bodies of the dead rebels on Scarif as she helps him down the beach so that he won't have to see his fallen comrades.
— (+) Determined: Jyn does not give up easily; she would not have survived as long as she has without that being the case. In the supplementary novel Rebel Rising, is Jyn's determination to learn and train that affords her incredible skill in combat, forgery, and slicing, a determination that will keep her going in the years on her own. Throughout the microcosm of the events of Rogue One, Jyn's determination is on display on numerous occasions, and is a major driving force behind the success of the effort to steal the Death Star plans. For example, even after losing her father upon just reuniting with him on Eadu, Jyn remains determined to deliver his message to the council of the Rebel Alliance; she's passionate in her delivery, even among the skepticism in the crowd, and when they won't sanction the mission, she inspires the people around her to carry through with it, anyway. And through the countless challenges that present themselves upon arrival on Scarif, Jyn continues to persist until the plans are transmitted; such determination literally changed the course of galactic history.
— (+) Quick-Thinking and Resourceful: Between her training with Saw Gerrera and the Partisans, and the fact that she has spent many years of her life on her own with limited support and resources, Jyn has had to develop an ability to both survive and adapt. She's quick-thinking, and uses whatever is around her to her advantage. For instance, when the Rebel Alliance arrives to break her out of prison on Wobani, Jyn gives the appearance of cooperation long enough to be released from her cuffs — and then attempts her escape only once they're off of her; without any weapons on her, she's able to use the first thing around her she can reach for, a shovel, to knock out several rebels and escape the transport (at least, before she's overpowered by reprogrammed Imperial security droid K2SO). Before departing for the mission on Jedha with Cassian Andor, she rifles through his belongings for a weapon, an A-180 blaster pistol, knowing she cannot be defenseless. Over the course of Rogue One, she is seen thinking on her feet and adjusting when things go south on several occasions, and through these cumulative efforts, is able to transmit the Death Star plans to the Alliance from the communications tower on Scarif.

— (-) Angry: Upon first glance, it's obvious — Jyn is an angry person, and can be unpleasant to deal with; this is present in how she deals with others, and in how she responds to situations, from her initial interrogation by the Rebel Alliance at the beginning of Rogue One to even more fraught scenarios. Until she takes pause and changes course (something she very much struggles to do, emotionally), anger is, more often than not, her default setting. This anger of hers, though, isn't simply just superficial. In a life largely defined by trauma, with chances for healthy emotional development cut off at the knees early, Jyn has predominantly learned to cope with it through anger, and is able to readily access that more than other emotions. For instance, among the complicated mess of emotions that Jyn has regarding figures from her past such as her father and Saw, anger tends to win out. Based on her behavior, one could even speculate that, when the anger runs out, Jyn doesn't really know how to go on. This can be evidenced by her response to seeing her father's hologram message on Jedha, the first time she's seen his face or heard his voice in well more than fifteen years, where she collapses near-catatonically to the ground.
— (-) Combative: For large parts of her life, Jyn has had to fight to survive — which means, by this point, the fight is what she defaults to, which is a logical corollary to the anger through which she's learned to cope. Throughout numerous canonical instances, Jyn approaches an interaction with another person as a potential fight, be it verbal or physical. In the literal sense, she certainly doesn't walk into most situations unarmed, and easily engages in brawling with stormtroopers in the middle of Jedha City, but such tendencies extend well beyond the literal. Jyn looks for verbal fights with others, and when she does, she takes great effort to find the words to strike with that will hurt the most. In Rogue One, this can be seen most notably in two instances: during her reunion with Saw after many years, she flatly tells him, "It's not a problem if you don't look up" when asked if she can stand to see the Imperial flag across the galaxy, and during her confrontation with Cassian after her father's death on Eadu, she tells him that he "might as well be a stormtrooper" for following orders he doesn't agree with, deliberately knowing that will touch a nerve. Rather than handling disagreements peacefully, Jyn will instead throw proverbial gasoline onto the fire.
— (-) Distrustful: A theme in Jyn's life story is that she has been abandoned by nearly everyone she's ever loved, in one way or another — her mother was killed in front of her when she was eight years old, her father was taken by the Empire, and Saw Gerrera, her adoptive father figure, left her behind when she was sixteen — and that, in large part, has contributed to a profound distrust in others, as well as the causes they might believe in. Though she obviously has no love for the Empire, Jyn's experiences have left her with a profound distrust of the rebel cause — one that isn't entirely mended before her death, as she has to engage in an unsanctioned mission to accomplish what she deems as needing to be accomplished. She keeps others at arm's length, afraid that they will abandon her just as all her loved ones previously have; she does admit, in a quiet moment, that she's "not used to people sticking around when things go bad," and when she does get support, belief, and commitment from someone else, she is shocked to the point of speechlessness, because she never in a million years expects that kind of thing from people she can't trust who will only let her down. While kindness will go a way to getting Jyn to let down her guard, it takes a lot.

• Character Skills:

Hand-to-hand combat: From the time she was eight years old, Jyn was trained to fight by Saw Gerrera, alongside his rebel cell known as the Partisans. She more than compensates for her small stature, and can take on people twice her size, by knowing where to punch and where to kick — especially where to punch.
Marksmanship/weaponry: Jyn also received extensive training in marksmanship and general weaponry. While she is a good shot with a blaster, she generally prefers blunt weapons, aiming to incapacitate her opponents more than kill them whenever possible.
Infiltration: Many of Jyn's missions with the Partisans involved infiltrating Imperial outposts, which is a skill that would translate into life on her own (as well as her eventual mission to Scarif to steal the Death Star plans). She is highly observant of her environment, and knows how to get in and out of places while attracting minimal attention, if need be.
Forgery/slicing: One of the many crimes on Jyn's canon rap sheet is forgery of Imperial documents, and in the supplementary novel Rebel Rising, Jyn displays such great skill with forging scandocs and Imperial clearance codes that she is able to help the Partisans slip past detection on numerous missions, and sells them for a price when she's on her own. Additionally, she is skilled with "slicing", or the Star Wars universe's equivalent of hacking, able to enter complex computer networks and extract information.
